No Fee Unless You Win
The LeapFrog Group, a nonprofit focused on improving hospital safety and quality in the U.S., gave nine Arizona hospitals an “A” grade in its biennial hospital safety report card. The report rates general hospitals from A to F based on their ability to prevent medical errors, infections, accidents, and other “avoidable harms.” The grades are based on expert analysis of publicly available data using “up to 32 evidence-based measures of patient safety.” Ultimately, more than 60% of Arizona hospitals received at least a “C.”
Many hospitals have world-renowned doctors and equipment, but not all hospitals prioritize patient safety above all else. Therefore, the group created its report card to help patients “know which hospitals do the best at protecting their patients from harm.” According to their analysis, “A” hospitals do a better job at preventing errors. Hospitals that fall below “A” should be encouraged to do better and improve their safety.
If you follow the group’s biannual gradings, you will notice a few of these hospitals repeatedly receive an “A.” It is important to note, however, that good grades do not mean the hospital and its providers are infallible. Even the best hospitals and providers commit preventable medical errors, but they tend to prioritize patent safety and participate in action plans to limit such errors.
All nine hospitals received a “D” grade. Thankfully, maybe, no Arizona hospital received an “F.” This does not mean Arizona’s least safe hospitals should be avoided at all costs. Instead, the group recommends “you should never refuse care in an emergency because of a hospital’s Safety Grade, but use [their] website as a guide for planned events and a research tool for potential emergencies.”
